Vaonis Atlas: A Modular All-Sky Smart Telescope - First Impressions

Ten years ago, Vaonis pretty much invented smart telescopes and released Stellina. This week, exactly a decade later, Vaonis announced a new intriguing smart telescope system: Atlas.
Despite being invited in person to the event, I was unable to go but have watched the announcement and gone through the spec sheet line by line. In this post, I'll explain to you clearly what Atlas is, what it can do, and if yes or no I'd recommend anyone spending $5K or more on it.
Pre-review: Because the Atlas is not yet released, everything below is based on Vaonis’s official announcement. No hands-on yet!

Final Verdict
What is Atlas?
Atlas is a modular smart telescope built from three parts:
A mount with a built-in all-sky camera called "Sky Guard"
One or two 80 mm imaging modules, each with its own optics and color sensor (more tubes will come out in the future)
"Sky Dock", the interface that couples each module to the mount
Vaonis Atlas Single Vaonis Atlas Twin
You can buy Atlas as a Single (one lens attachment) or a Twin (two tubes pointing at the same target). Both use the same mount, and the same app. The main reason of having two lenses aimed at the same target is of course to double your exposure time during the same imaging sequence. Tubes of different diameter will be available in the future, allowing you to change depending on your target!
Sky Guard
Sky Guard is a 185° fisheye camera that uses a Sony IMX676 sensor (12 MP) and is built into the mount. It shoots the whole sky above you, day and night. At night, the star map is overlaid on that live image, showing you the constellations, stars, targets, and more. You can tap an object in the sky and Atlas will slew to it.

Sky Guard also detects the horizon, the Sun and the Moon on its own and uses them to initialize the instrument. It can create a horizon overlay so that your telescope doesn't point at nearby trees or houses.
The app shows a Dual View with the all-sky feed next to the imaging screen, so that you can always know where you’re pointed. It can also record a time-lapse of the whole sky while the telescope images your target.

Smart telescopes are already super easy to use, but it's true that if you're a total beginner, it can still be somewhat confusing to pick a target from a catalog. So choosing it in the real sky visible overhead is a more natural way to decide what the telescope captures. I want to see how reliable the horizon detection and initialization are, but that all seems very good!
Vaonis Atlas Optics: 80mm Quadruplet with no Central Obstruction
The tubes are apochromatic quadruplet refractors, with sharp stars across the frame promised by Vaonis.
Quick specs:

The Atlas smart telescope has an aperture of 80mm (for each imaging tube). The focal length is 360mm and the focal ratio f/4.5. Its design is an apochromatic quadruplet, with 4 lenses in 3 groups (Petzval-derived). As for the glass quality, it is 2 extra-low dispersion elements + 1 lenthanum element.
The sensor is the Sony IMX585 (color). It has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 (8.3 MP), 1/1.2" format (11.2 × 6.3 mm), and a pixel size of 2.9 µm. Its native field of view is 1.78° × 1.00° but with mosaic mode, should be able to go up to 3.5° × 2.00° and 24 MP.

The native field of view is a little tight but should be perfect for most galaxies, small nebulae and clusters. Of course, using the mosaic mode is crucial for imaging large nebulae! It would also be interesting to see how it performs on planets, knowing that smart telescopes are so far never very impressive when it comes to planetary.
So far, the pictures shown by Vaonis are very impressive!
Output formats are will be a choice between FITS 16-bit raw if you want to stack all the frames yourself, TIFF 16-bit for processing the master file, or JPEG if you just want quick viewing.

Atlas Single or Atlas Twin?
With the Twin version, two imaging modules observe the same target and the software stacks both automatically. Technically, this should give you:
2× the light collected within the same time
+41% signal-to-noise ratio (which is the square root of 2)
f/3.2 equivalent focal ratio (although in reality it's still two f/4.5 lenses working together)
The field of view stays the same, and the tubes can't be pointed at two different objects at once. In short, this means that an image that took you two nights to capture with the Atlas Single would only take you one night to achieve with the Atlas Twin, you're doubling your exposure time.

Final Thoughts
The Vaonis Atlas is clearly not competing with the budget smart telescope market we're used to. It’s aimed at people who want a very high end and somewhat expandable system, and of course that are also willing to pay for it.
Although we learned a lot from this announcement, there are a few things I'm impatient to know. For example, how impressive is the Twin system over the Single, how well the automatic combination of the data works, how portable the entire system is, and how is the experience with the new app Gaia. I wish some other features were included, like all built-in filters for example.
For now, Atlas looks like a true evolution in the world of smart telescope rather than another simple upgrade, and that's what I love Vaonis for: Innovation! This feels like a whole new category of smart scopes, and it will be exciting to see how it faces against the others like the upcoming DWARF Draco.
If you’re thinking about pre-ordering, you can get the discount until November 15.
