Beginner Astrophotography - How to Get Started

Inspiration can strike from anywhere. Perhaps you saw a space photo online that got you interested and now you're thinking, "Hey - I can do that!" And, you can! As long as you have the drive and a DSLR camera, you can get started as soon as tonight! Learn from our past mistakes and find out how to get started from nothing in the article below.

Beginner Astrophotography Equipment

Astrophotography can become an expensive hobby. Often, your passion increases faster than you can fund your dream setup. With a budget in mind, you need a way to see all of your options and what's affordable. We created a guide to help you choose the equipment for your perfect setup. Find out more in this article.

Astrophotography with a DSLR Camera and a Tripod

When you think of astrophotography, you think: camera, telescope, and mount. What if we told you that you can take pictures without a telescope or a tracker? If you've got a DSLR camera and a sturdy tripod, you can practice taking photos and SEE results. While the images may not be the best quality, we tested it and it's possible! See how below.

Top Targets Without a Telescope (DSLR Astrophotography)

Contrary to belief, you DON'T need a telescope to take good photos of deep-sky objects. Instead of using a telescope, you will use a wide-field telephoto lens. This will help you achieve the zoom needed to get those far-away objects. Find out the targets we suggest and what you'll need as well.

Learn PixInsight

We use PixInsight to stack and process our images. If you're interested in learning how to use the software for your astrophotography, we have a whole resource page like this one! The software's learning curve is steep, but we do our best to keep our guides short and easy to follow. Click here to LEARN PIXINSIGHT.

We also offer a processing guide. You can follow our workflow step-by-step. Click the Advanced Guide to the right to check it out!

Alternatively, you can also ask us to process your images for you. Get more info by visiting our Services page.

What Can I Photograph This Month?

The most common question an astrophotographer asks themself is what do I photograph tonight?

If you're here, then you have come across that question too. Never fear, we've found five targets for you to capture for every month of the year. Three of the suggestions are beginner-level targets, and if you're up for the challenge, we've added two advanced targets to try to capture, too. Take a look and share your end result with us in the blog comments!
